The project includes reconstruction of underground drainage systems to collect roadway storm water runoff for treatment that will meet state-of-the-art requirements to preserve, restore, and enhance the environment of the Lake Tahoe region. New features include soil conservation systems, infiltration basins and specially designed underground sand traps and collection vaults. Construction is scheduled to begin at midnight on Monday, August 18, east of Tahoe City and will continue east to Dollar Hill, near Old Country Road until October 15. Most of the traffic-interfering work will be performed at night between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. Delays up to 20 minutes can be expected during the nighttime work. Daytime work will be done on the shoulders and behind concrete barriers. Roadside message boards will be used to alert motorists of traffic controls. The prime contractor on this project is Diablo Contractors of San Ramon, California. Completion is expected in 2011. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the construction area, watch for trucks entering and exiting the roadway and to “Slow for the Cone Zone”.
