About the Park....
In 1969, Emerald Bay was designated a National Natural Landmark for its brilliant panorama of mountain-building processes and glacier carved granite.
The natural beauty, geology and history of its (Fanette Island) unique island make it one of the highlights of any visit to the Lake Tahoe area.
The Park features Vikingsholm, one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere. The "Tea House" on Fannette Island, the only island to be found in all of Lake Tahoe was built and enjoyed by Mrs. Knight and her guests.
Mrs. Knights Butler would row her and her guests to the Island, setup the picnic at the stone Tea House, and while they dined enjoying the panoramic views of Emerald Bay, the Butler would return to Vikingsholm to gas and wash the visitors vehicle. That being accomplished, he would again row out to Fannette Island to retrieve Mrs. Knight and her guests. It was a whole day outing for those venturing down the dusty dirt road from Tahoe City on what we now know as Hwy 89.
The Park is closed in winter.
